Mount Si softball cruising into postseason

SNOQUALMIE - It was another solid week last week for Mount Si softball as the team closed out the regular season on a strong note.
Last Monday, the Wildcats fell to the Issaquah Eagles at Issaquah, 4-0. Brenda Bray, the Issaquah senior pitcher, froze the Mount Si bats except for Amy Trenkamp, who logged all three Wildcat hits in the defeat.

Seniors celebrated before win against Newport
Last Wednesday, it was a wonderful Senior Day as Trenkamp, Kayla Jayne, Ashley Svarthumle, Sam Baldwin and coach Larry White's daughter Emily were honored for their four years of success in the Mount Si program. The Wildcats then went out and pulled off a tough 1-0 win over the Newport Knights.
The Wildcats struggled all day against Newport freshman pitcher Stacey Hagensen, but it was a little station-to-station' fundamental softball that allowed for the victory. In the bottom of the sixth, Lacey Blais walked, then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Trenkamp. Katie Morgan then singled and after a bobble by the Newport right fielder, Blais scored. Kandis Clesson then went to work and got things done in the seventh. She fired a two-hitter at the Knights, the hits being in the sixth and seventh innings. The junior struck out eight.
"I think Kandis is back and ready to rock," said coach White.
As for the hit, Morgan knew what she had to do.
"I knew I had to get the job done and I was hitting the girl [Hagensen] well and I needed to go right side because I knew if I did, and it got in the outfield, Lacey's [Blais] got wheels to come around and score," Morgan said.
Coach White said it was all part of the game plan.
"One of the things that we talked about after our Issaquah game was going back to the basics and getting the little things done. And Lacey led off with a walk, Amy [Trenkamp] laid down the perfect bunt, and Katie [Morgan] slapped one through the right side and got it done for us. It's just those little things," the coach said.
Coach White also praised Newport and their pitcher.
"Newport's going home stinging because it was that close a game. They're a very, very good team," he said, "She [Hagensen] did a great job. I was very impressed."

Clesson no hits Mercer Island
Last Friday, Clesson was even better as she no-hit the Mercer Island Islanders on their home field in a 14-0 six-inning blowout called early due to the 10-run rule. With the win and Liberty's win over Issaquah, Mount Si clinched a first-round bye in the Kingco tournament and an automatic berth in the Sea-King District tournament.
The Wildcats are hosting the 2005 3A Kingco Softball Tournament this week at Centennial Fields in Snoqualmie. Mount Si's first contest is set for Thursday. Five teams will advance to the Sea-King District Tournament next week at a newly renovated Starfire Sports Complex at Fort Dent Park in Tukwila.
With the Wildcats and Patriots both receiving automatic bids, all attention will shift largely to Issaquah and Sammamish this week at Centennial in the Kingco Tournament. The Eagles finished third, but boast a strong senior class led by Bray, and the Totems have been a bit of a surprise this season. Their pitcher, sophomore Sarah Minice, is poised to be Clesson's rival on the mound next season. Newport and Bellevue also will be competing in the tournament. The Knights appear to have a better shot at advancing to district than the Wolverines do, but considering how far Bellevue has gone the last two years (making it to district both times under former coach Bruce Zimmer) the Wolverines can not be counted out either.
