Brielle Buhner and Megan Stone led the way with home runs for the Mount Si softball team as they scored a win over Mercer Island on Wednesday.
Many players saw time and most scored runs in the 24-2 five-inning win over a hobbled Islander team.
Mount Si scored 12 runs in the first inning to take control early. Stone’s home run was down the left field line and keyed the initial Wildcat outburst. Buhner’s came in the third.
Junior pitcher Sara Rice shut down the Islanders, giving up two runs. Her game plan was simple.
“I just tried to throw good pitches right around the plate, get some hits down and let my field help me out behind me,” Rice said.
“Sara did a real nice job on the mound for us,” said Mount Si coach Larry White. “Sara showed us that we can use her later on against a good team.”
On the Mercer Island mound for the first time, converted infielder Patti Chew had first-time struggles, but battled hard and made it through her four innings.
“She’s never pitched before, poor kid, and she’s throwing strikes,” said White, who also praised the Islander team and coach Jessica Steinle.
“Their coach is dedicated to what she’s doing and that’s a tough situation,” he said. “She keeps working hard and those girls are responding for her.”
Mercer Island has been the league’s cellar dwellers for the last several seasons, and league opponents have consistently beat them by significant margins; case in point, earlier this month, Interlake beat the Islanders 30-2.
In other action last week, Mount Si was no-hit in a 9-0 loss at league-leading Juanita last Friday.
