The girls led the way for the Mount Si contingent at last weekend’s state 3A boys and girls track and field meets in Tacoma.
The Lady Wildcats finished sixth overall with 41 team points scored, with Snohomish’s Glacier Peak taking the girls’ title.
The majority of the Wildcats’ points were earned last Saturday, May 29, in three events, two of which saw Mount Si individual event title winners.
In the 300 meter hurdles, senior Hannah Hasbun closed out her high school career with a state title in the competition, running the course in 45.15 seconds to narrowly beat a competitor from the Wildcats’ former Seamount League rival Highline for the top spot.
Fellow senior Georgia Reynolds also closed out her high school career with an individual event state crown in the pole vault. She leaped 11 feet to take the title, beating two athletes from Clark County in the southwest part of the state to grab the trophy.
Molly Meyers also capped her career in high school on a strong note, as the senior took fifth in the girls shot put with a throw of 37 feet, 6.25 inches to earn the Wildcats four team points.
The Saturday results built off solid showings last Friday, May 28, starting with the javelin event, where both Wildcat entrants took top five finishes. Kelly Besmer finished second with a throw of 129 feet, just a few feet short of the winning throw by Anna Adamko of Vancouver’s Columbia River. Emily Ferree took fourth for the Wildcats with a toss of 113 feet, two inches. Besmer’s result earned Mount Si eight team points, while Ferree’s added five.
Additional points for the Wildcat ladies came last Thursday, May 27, in the discus. Mount Si’s Corina Linder completed her excellent comeback season with a fifth place throw of 116 feet, 10 inches, which earned the Wildcats four more points in the team standings. Former Mount Si athlete Summer Nash, who competed for Seattle’s Bishop Blanchet, took fourth in this event.
While things went well in the throwing events, the sprinting events did not go as well. Mount Si’s relay team of Natalie Opsvig, Sophie Rockow, Hannah Hasbun and Georgia Reynolds failed to qualify for finals in both the 4×100 and 4×200 events. The Wildcats last Thursday finished ninth in the 4×100 prelims (1:46.71), then last Friday finished 11th in the 4×100 prelims (50.95 seconds).
Boys results
The Mount Si boys team struggled, but did walk away with a couple of team points; those were scored last Saturday with a seventh place finish by Kolton Auxier in the shot put. The sophomore threw 50 feet, 7.25 inches to earn those team points for the Wildcats, which clinched a tie for 41st as a team; the team title winner was Spokane’s North Central.
In competition last Friday, Dylan Woll finished 14th in the discus, with a throw of 127 feet, six inches, and Zach Storm took 11th in the javelin with a toss of 150 feet, three inches. Neither result earned Mount Si any points in the team standings.
