In a battle between two of the favorites in Kingco 3A girls’ soccer, the Sammamish Totems’ Holli Abelson took a pass off a corner kick in the 87th minute and scored what turned out to be the lone goal in a game against Mount Si.

The 1-0 overtime loss last Thursday at Mount Si High School was the Wildcats’ 3A KingCo home opener.

The goal, which went in to the right of sprawling Mount Si goalkeeper Caitlin Braun, capped off an exciting game for both teams. Sammamish goalie Amy Hemmingson was credited with a shutout after stopping 11 shots for the Totems and seeing several others go wide of the Totem net.

“We played a good game, just one little bad adjustment and that was it,” said Mount Si coach Bruce Caldwell.

The game was physical throughout, and both sides got good scoring chances, especially Mount Si and its star, Kristen Berndt. She had several opportunities to score during the course of the game, but the Totems were able to respond every time.
