Sister act: Wildcat gymnastics looks to continue successful streak with family affair

Not one but two pairs of sisters will compete on floors, bars and beams for the Mount Si gymnastics program this winter. Family affairs include senior Tandi and Tiana Duvall and senior Kennedy and sophomore Hannah Richmond. Look for the Richmonds to bring their A-game to the bars and floor, with the Duvalls strong on beam. As a senior with a leadership role, Kennedy is ready for that responsibility.

“We’ve got a lot of new girls. We want to get to know them and try to make them comfortable here and make sure everyone’s having a good time,” she said.

“I’m really just working on perfecting all my routines and I just want to have a really fun season,” added Hannah.

The group of newcomers, including freshmen Carissa Castagno and Aubrey McMichael, have earned considerable praise from coach Jessica Easthope.

“They have blown me out of the water,” she said. “They have been so impressive just within the first week” of practices.

Easthope is back for her fourth year helming the program. She is pleased with the turnout.

“We’re doing really well in numbers,” Easthope said. Turnout for the team this year is around 31 girls, and there is a lot of good talent, both in the returnees and newcomers.

Mount Si’s gymnastics program has had a successful last two seasons, with fourth-place finishes at state both years. This year’s team has a large part of the nucleus from last year’s team back, and they look to do it once again this season.

New competitors will look to help support a strong core of gymnasts with plenty of experience; this group, including junior Lexi Swanson, and sophomores Jessica Trotto and Elizabeth Holmes. Holmes and Trotto both emerged as strong competitors last season as freshmen, and will look to improve on that this season.

Bellevue looks to be the chief league competition for Mount Si, but Easthope is ready for anything. “You just never know in high school sports,” she said. Other teams to watch include Mercer Island and Juanita.

Mount Si has one home meet in December and another in January.
