The Cedarcrest High School cross country teams turned in fast times and showed big drive in their sole home meet of the year, held Thursday, Oct. 6, at Carnation Golf Course.
The Red Wolves hosted Kings, Lakewood, South Whidbey and a special visitor, the boys squad from Iolani High School on Honolulu, over for a mainland visit.
“Top to bottom, it was our best performance of the year,” Red Wolves head coach Bruce McDowell reported. “I was really pleased with our overall competitive drive.”
Two-thirds of the way through the fall season, McDowell said the team is in shape and things are paying off.
Up front, Mitchell Montgomery and Logan Orndorf were first and second finishers as the Red Wolves put five boys in the top 11. Diana Carr and Amelia Anderson finished third and fourth with a similar Cedarcrest-heavy loadout in the top 11.
With the top three girls teams and the top two boys teams in the conference, it was a tight battle. Halfway through the meet, the Red Wolves had pulled ahead.
“Our number five through seven runners ran solid last miles and helped push us to victory,” McDowell said. Both teams were able to put their number-six and seven runners in front of the opponents’ number fives. The girls scored 34 to beat Kings by 15. The boys scored 26 to beat Lakewood by 25.
McDowell’s athletes of the meet were Cody Wanichek, Zach Wyakos, Miranda Vergillo and Madison Smith.
