State dreams by the Mount Si softball team ended after a two-win, three-loss series at districts last week.

Tournament hopes took a significant hit on Thursday, May 21, as missed opportunities bit the ‘Cats, who fell to Bishop Blanchet.

Mount Si was blanked 6-0 by the Metro League Braves in a Sea-King District Tournament game at Seattle’s Lower Woodland Fields.

The Wildcats put two runners on base in scoring position in the first inning and loaded the bases in the third, both times with one out. The team failed to score a single run, though.

“It’s been the story of the season for us,” said Mount Si coach Larry White, “giving teams that extra one and two outs per inning. They come back and beat us.”

Pitcher Alex Johnson gave up just five hits despite pitching most of the game with a bad bruise on her shin, which came when a line drive hit her hard early in the contest.

“We should have come out and did more damage,” Johnson said.

“We could have hit her a lot better,” she added, referring to Blanchet’s starting pitcher, sophomore Hannah Shanahan.

Megan Stone had a pair of hits and Brielle Buhner had a double. The Braves scored twice in the first inning and twice more in the third following the Wildcats’ chances in those frames.

Breanna Skeslien came a home run short of the cycle (she had a single, double and a triple) and drove in four runs to lead Bishop Blanchet.

In a loser-out game prior to the Blanchet match, Mount Si handled Seattle Prep 10-0 in five innings. Freshman pitcher Kendra Lee, brought up from junior varsity for the postseason, started on the mound and pitched one-hit ball through four innings and struck out six.

“It was really fun to play varsity,” Lee said. “I knew that they were behind me in defense.”

“Kendra did a really nice job,” White said. “We were real confident that she would go out there and throw strikes. We knew we were going to score runs against Prep; we just needed somebody who could throw strikes and get it done for us.”

The Wildcats scored runs in every inning off of Seattle Prep starter Jessica Bladow of Fall City, taking advantage of six Panther errors. Kimber Behrends, Sara Rice and Maura Murphy each led the way with a double apiece, and Rice and Danielle Massengill each scored a pair of runs. Melissa Webster had two hits.

Mount Si beat Bellevue 12-5 in their first game on Friday, May 22. After Bellevue scored five runs in the fifth inning, the Wildcats scored six runs in the sixth to take the lead.

Then, the Wildcats lost to Bainbridge 12-2 in six innings. The mercy rule ended it early.

Mount Si next played West Seattle for fifth place. The Wildcats took an 8-1 lead in the third inning, only to see West Seattle come back and tie things in the bottom of the seventh, 8-8. West Seattle scored twice in the bottom of the ninth under international tiebreaker rules to win 10-9.

Mount Si ends the season at 14-14.
