Hall to swim for Buccaneers
Snoqualmie resident Grace Hall, a junior at Beloit College in Wisconsin, has been made a member of the institution’s swim team for the 2005-06 season. Beloit College is a residential, liberal arts college offering 40 majors to 1,250 students.
Wildcat soccer postseason honors
Several Mount Si Wildcats girls’ soccer players made the Kingco 3A Girls Soccer All-Star teams.
The lone first teamer was defender Kali Roestel, and she was joined by second-teamers Krisi Lund on defense, Jordan Tipton as both defender and forward, Nikki Stanton as midfielder and Jessica Blessard as goalkeeper.
Honorable mentions went to six other Wildcats: Collette Hatch, Monica Nelson and Jessica Oliver as midfielders, Mariana Zanella and Amy Torget as forwards and defender Katie Woolsey.
The first team awards were dominated by Kingco champ Issaquah as five Eagles, led by forward (and Wildcat nemesis) Kate Deines, took honors.
College soccer update for two Valley athletes
Former Wildcat soccer standout Kristen Berndt was named to the Northwest Conference Women’s Soccer first team in awards recently released. Berndt, a sophomore at Whitman, finished with a team high nine goals and six assists for the 10-6-3 Missionaries.
Freshman goalkeeper Scott Barnum’s excellent play has helped Whitworth College’s mens team to a 19-1-1 mark, and a conference championship. The Pirates are deep into the NCAA playoffs. Whitworth hosted a regional Nov. 19 and 20 in Spokane. Barnum, an Eastside Catholic graduate from Fall City, has a 0.67 GAA in nine games this season.
Several Wildcat grads on local college hardwood
Mount Si basketball fans will have plenty of college action to interest them this season as several former Wildcat stars will see time on local colleges’ hardwood.
Leading the list is former Mount Si girl hoops star Rachel Travis. Travis, a freshman, is playing for Northwest University in Kirkland. The remaining ex-Cats are all playing community-college ball. Former boys standout Erik Tierney plays at Olympic in Bremerton, while fellow former teammate Luke Landdeck is in his second year playing for Bellevue Community College. On the BCC women’s team are Luke’s sister Nicci, and fellow former Wildcat Marie Will. Another ex-Wildcat, Whitney Beyerlin, is playing this winter for Green River’s women’s team.
The BCC women are scheduled to host Green River on Dec. 30, while fans will have to wait until March 4 to see the men battle one another, when BCC’s men will host Tierney’s Olympic Community College team.
Two more qualify for state
The Sno-Valley Gymnastics Level 4 team took first place in vault, bars and beam and second place in floor at the recent Freedom Festival meet in Puyallup. The team won a trophy for second place overall, edged out of first by Puget Sound Gymnastics by a mere .275 points (106.875 vs. 106.6).
Carissa Castagno and Elizabeth Holmes qualified for the state championship meet. Eight out of 10 gymnasts have qualified to date. Elyssa Roeder won first place overall with a first place on vault, sixth on bars, second on beam and fourth on floor. Savannah Morrison won fifth place overall with a first place on bars and a first place on beam. Nikki Gmerek won 10th place overall and fourth place on beam. Lexi Swanson and Carissa Castagno shared fifth place on vault. Kira Jerome tied for second place on bars. Sno-Valley Gymnastics is located in STARS, 1546 Boalch Ave. N.W. No. 80, North Bend. Local runner goes the distance
Keith Stringfellow, a 1988 graduate of Mount Si, recently ran in the Seattle Half Marathon, finishing in one hour, 29 minutes to take 99th overall. He also ran in the 109th annual Boston Marathon. He finished the race in three hours, 17 minutes to take 2,348th out of 17,500 runners. Stringfellow currently lives in Julian, Calif. He is married with two children and is the director of a Christian camp in Julian. He graduated from Bola University with a degree in intercultural studies. Stringfellow is the son of Joann and Ewing Stringfellow of North Bend.
