Local runners do well
Four Snoqualmie Valley youth cross country runners, two from Snoqualmie Middle School (SMS) and two from Mount Si High School, participated with the Issaquah Gliders in the USA cross-country regional Junior Olympics in Spokane on Saturday, Nov. 19. The top 20 individuals and three teams in each age division qualified for the National Cross Country Junior Olympics in Providence, R.I. on Dec 10.
SMS runners Alex Rudd and Max McDevitt competed in the age 13-14-year-old 4K division. In her first Junior Olympics regional meet, Rudd ran to an impressive 29th-place finish. McDevitt helped the Gliders 13- and 14-year-old boys’ team to a second place finish just 14 points behind first-place Oregon. He ran to a 22nd-place finish and was the Gliders team’s fifth scorer.
Owen Strom (23rd place) and Drake daPonte (24th place) were runners number two and three respectively for the Gliders 15- and 16-year-old team which placed third with 60 points behind Federal Way (17) and Team Ephrata (45).
Gymnasts take third
The Sno-Valley Gymnastics level four team took a third-place trophy in the fall meet at Cascade Elite Gymnastics without one of its strongest team members, Lexi Swanson. She was unable to compete due to her arm injury.
In the 9-year-old division, Elyssa Roeder took first place all-around, tied for first on vault, first on bars, fifth on beam and second on floor. Kira Jerome tied for first on vault, and placed second on bars, second on beam and fourth all-around. Jennifer Rogers tied for fifth place on vault and placed fourth on bars and third place on floor. Nikki Gmerek tied for fifth place on vault and received a first place on beam. In the 10-plus division, Savannah Morrison received third place on bars and Carissa Castagno took third place on vault. Gymnastics East posts results
Several local gymnasts from Gymnastics East in Preston competed in various events. In the Candy Corn classic, Mallory Fortier took fifth overall in the 6- and 7-year-old division. She scored a 7.30 in the floor exercise and 9.00 on the vault.
In the 10-year-old division, Cassidy McDowell placed second with a total of 35.62 points overall. She also placed first in the bars with a score of 9.30, second on the beam with a score of 8.75 and first in the vault with a score of 9.15.
In the Carousel Classic held in Bellevue recently, Fortier took fourth overall in the 6- and 7-year-old division. She placed fourth in bars with a score of 8.150, second on the floor with a score of 8.40 and third in the vault with a score of 8.95. In that same age group, Miah Batton took fourth in the floor.
In the 8-year-old group, Hailey Johnson took sixth overall with a score of 33.00. She placed sixth on the beam with a score of 8.00 and fourth on the floor with a score of 8.30.
In the 9-year-old division, two local gymnasts placed. Sarah Wheeler took fourth overall with a score of 34.25 and Amanda Dumont took ninth overall with a score of 32.45.
Wheeler took fourth on the bars with a score of 8.95, second on the beam with a score of 8.40 and fifth in the vault with a score of 9.00. Dumont took sixth on the floor with a score of 8.00 and third on the beam with a score of 8.25.
