Haakenson excels at Championships

Pacific Lutheran University’s Dan Haakenson, a 2001 graduate of Mount Si High School, had a great showing at the Northwest Conference Track and Field Championships at Linfield College.

Haakenson earned all-conference honors during the first day of competition and won the hammer throw on the second day.

Haakenson recorded a conference best and season best mark of 177-1, more than three feet better than Nate Matlock of Willamette, who was the defending champion.

Svarthumle ends college career

Aaron Svarthumle, a senior third baseman on the Pacific University (Oregon) baseball team, saw his college career come to an end Sunday as his Boxers team ended their season with a loss to Linfield (Oregon), 7-2. The Mount Si grad went 1-4 in his final college outing and finished the season with some solid numbers.

Svarthumle played in all of the Boxers’ contests this season and hit .322, with five home runs and 15 RBIs. He scored 17 runs, stole six bases and had a .430 on base percentage. Pacific finished the year under .500 at 15-19 overall, 10-14 within the Northwest Conference.

The win Sunday for Linfield clinched a share of the conference crown and a trip to the NCAA baseball postseason.

Former Wildcats on Eastern gridiron

Mount Si is well represented on the football field at Eastern Washington University in Cheney as two former Wildcat players are making an impression on head coach Paul Wulff. He just finished watching his Eastern Washington University football team make big plays both offensively and defensively in a 55-play scrimmage that concluded the third week of spring football practice at EWU. Eastern concludes its fourth and final week Saturday (May 7) at 2 p.m. at Woodward Field.

“This was a good physical scrimmage,” Wulff said. “I thought both sides of the ball made a lot of positive plays today and it was really encouraging.”

Eastern’s offense finished with 249 yards of total offense, most of that generated by backup quarterback Chris Peerboom. The sophomore from Beaverton, Ore. completed 7-of-12 passes for 102 yards and a touchdown, giving Wulff a great deal of confidence in the backup for senior All-America quarterback Erik Meyer.

Meyer played sparingly, completing 5-of-9 passes for 70 yards and a 26-yard touchdown to All-America receiver Eric Kimble. 2003 Mount Si graduate and third-string quarterback Alex Smart was 3-of-5 for 19 yards as the Eagles finished with 191 yards passing. 2001 Mount Si graduate Junior Brett Bergstrom, who redshirted as a defensive back last fall, finished with four catches for 64 yards after moving to wide receiver this spring. He caught a 10-yard touchdown pass from Smart, and had a 31-yard catch earlier in the scrimmage. He also had a 38-yard reception from Peerboom called back because of penalty.
