A stellar effort by seniors led the Mount Si girls track and field team to a fifth-place finish at last weekend’s state meet.

The Mount Si boys finished 29th as a team at state, held at Mount Tahoma High School in Tacoma.

Diana Keller scored or helped to score team points in three events with big performances as Mount Si picked up 36 points — the girls’ best team state finish in more than a decade.

Points were awarded in events for the top eight finishers on a sliding scale based on where an athlete finished. Rainier Beach was the girls state title winner with 65 team points.

Keller’s big day Saturday started with a solid second place finish in the 100-meter hurdles at 14.71 seconds. Then, Keller leaped 17 feet, 6.5 inches to win the long jump crown by a comfortable margin over Cleveland’s Olivia Ward. Helen Hasbun finished 12th in the event.

Keller helped teammates Helen and Hannah Hasbun, Nikki Stanton, Sophie Rockow and Natalie Opsvig take a third place finish in the 4×100 meter relay with a time of 49.38 seconds.

The Hasbuns were also busy bringing in the points last Saturday. The sisters also participated in the 4×200 meter relay, teaming with Rockow, Opsvig, Stanton and Taylor Robbins to pocket sixth place in that event, running it in 1:45.90. Helen Hasbun ran the 200-meter race, and finished seventh to card two more points for the Wildcats. The junior ran a time of 26.12 seconds.

Georgia Reynolds added to her run of state success, taking third in the pole vault by launching herself 10 feet. Kelly Besmer finished 15th.

On Thursday, May 29, Corinna Linder got things started with an eighth place finish in the discus, throwing it 109 feet, seven inches. Tori Howell finished 15th.

Meanwhile, the boys finished with seven points. Seniors Brandon Roddewig and Kyle Stevens were responsible for all points.

Roddewig finished third in the pole vault on Thursday, leaping 14 feet, three inches to gain six points for the Wildcats. On Friday, May 20, Stevens added the last point with an eighth place finish in the javelin, throwing it 180 feet, eight inches. Zach Storm finished 17th.

No points were scored by Mount Si on Saturday, as Roddewig finished just outside the points-paying positions with a ninth place finish in the high jump; he finished with the same jump height as five others but was placed in the ninth position on the final standings. Ryan Ransavage finished 10th in the shot put.

Spokane’s North Central High took the boys’ state team crown.
