Despite a winless season, the Mount Si High School boys tennis team had solid representation at the recent Kingco Tournament.
A Wildcat doubles team quickly became the big story, overshadowing the struggles of the rest of the Mount Si contingent.
The pair of Brian Johnson and Stephen Salmon were the only Wildcats to log wins at the tournament. Johnson and Salmon opened play Wednesday, Nov. 5 with a win over Benny Tran and Hayden Lank of Sammamish, 6-1, 6-0. The Mount Si pair then fell to the No. 4 seeds Dahyuk Hahm and Jake Ichikawa of Juanita, 1-6, 6-3, 6-4. Johnson and Salmon then pulled off two more wins Nov. 6 and 7 before falling twice in a row, first to No. 2 seeds Zach Kosanke and CJ Smeraldo of Bellevue 6-3, 6-3, then ending the tournament with another loss to Hahm and Ichikawa, 7-5, 3-6, 7-6 (7-4 tiebreak). Johnson and Salmon finished sixth in the tournament.
The remaining Mount Si players, singles players Alex Bolves and Ryan Oswald, and doubles pair Scotty Paophavihanh and Tyler Ostby, all were quickly eliminated with two straight losses apiece. This group was 0-2 against Juanita opponents, and also fell to opponents from Liberty, Bellevue, Sammamish and Mercer Island.
The event was held over the three days, Nov. 5 through 7, at three different locations: the Amy Yee tennis facility in Seattle, the Nordstrom Tennis Center at the University of Washington, and the Mercer Island Country Club.
