The week in sports

A look at high school athletics from the Valley.

Cedarcrest does well at Lynden

The Cedarcrest Red Wolves varsity wrestling team traveled to Lynden recently and took first place in team competition.

In addition, several wrestlers took individual honors. In the 119-pound class, Aaron Pedeferri took first place. Teammate Darren DeBoer took first in the 130-pound class, and Robby Westermann took first in the 189-pound class.

Cole Birk took second in the 215-pound class, and Andrew Claussen along with Tony Stedman took third in the 145- and 152-pound classes, respectively.

Rounding out the placing was Vong Ly, who took fifth in the 275-pound class.

JV boys wind down season

Mount Si’s junior-varsity boys’ basketball team dropped two games last week, losing 51-45 to Newport and 65-43 against Mercer Island.

The ‘Cats were hammered by fouls on Newport’s home court, with the final tally being Mount Si 32 fouls, Newport eight. The Knights shot 39 free throws, while Mount Si shot nine.

Top scorers for the Wildcats were Casey Hough, 11, and Hank Kennedy, nine. Leading rebounders were Hough with nine and Luke Landdeck and DJ Pennewell with seven each.

In action against the Islanders, the leading scorers for the ‘Cats were Jordan Proudfoot with 14, Hough with nine and Kennedy with eight.

Top rebounders were Jarrod Wiegardt with six and Landdeck with five. John Karlen had four assists, and Wiegardt and Landdeck each had three.

The two losses left the JV boys’ KingCo Conference record at 7-3, and their season record at 9-5.

Last-minute shot gives Skyline win

With Mount Si’s varsity boys’ basketball team tied 71-71 in overtime against Skyline, the Spartans’ Ian Tusher grabbed a rebound, turned with one dribble and fired a shot from the opposite free-throw line as the buzzer sounded. It was a 70-foot prayer that dropped in to give the Spartans a 74-71 victory over the ‘Cats.

Mount Si’s record fell to 3-8 in the KingCo Conference and 6-12 overall following the loss Friday night. The victory clinched a playoff berth for Skyline (6-5 conference, 10-8 overall), which needed nine points in the final 41 seconds to even force the overtime.

Jeremy Johnston scored 20 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for the Wildcats, while Logan Ratcliffe added 18 points.

CHS pins down wrestling crown

The Cedarcrest wrestling team had a back-up chorus from its fans when singing the school fight song in celebration of the 3A KingCo dual-meet title. The Red Wolves (9-0 conference) completed their sweep of league opponents with a 36-27 victory over Liberty (7-2).

“It feels great,,” Cedarcrest junior Kurtis Lett said. “It feels [like] ‘wow.'”

Lett, 125 pounds, defeated Craigh Cornelius by pin at the 1:40 mark, which was one of the key matches, according to first-year Cedarcrest coach Jeff Newcomer.

“He knew that he needed a pin,” Newcomer said. At the time, the Red Wolves led 30-21 and needed the six points for a pin to clinch the meet.

“I went in confident, but not cocky,” Lett said. “He’s a very good wrestler. He messed up one move.”

Both schools won seven matches each, but Cedarcrest earned the victory with the help of a surprise pin from Stephen Gunderson, 112 pounds, after 12 seconds over Daren Keblish.

Tony Stedman, 152 pounds, added another valuable point when he defeated Justin Dennison 10-1, good for a major decision and four team points.

Defending state champion, Aaron Pedeferri, 119 pounds, made the process short with Liberty’s Ryan Bamford and won by technical fall 15-0. Alan Shults, 160 pounds, and Robby Westermann, 189 pounds, also won for the Red Wolves.

Immediately after the match was over, the Cedarcrest wrestlers struggled to find the words to describe the feelings of being champions.

“It’s overwhelming right now,” Gunderson said.

“This team worked so hard from the first day,” Stedman said. “We worked for this one.”

For Stedman, a senior, it means a complete turnaround from his freshman year when the team was 0-9. But it wasn’t a surprise for the Red Wolves, who knew that the upcoming talent was good.

“My sophomore year, we were looking at who was coming up,” Stedman said. “This team is going to be something.

The Red Wolves also had the support of the Mount Si wrestling team which came directly from its 54-16 win against Skyline to watch the meet.

‘Cats fall to Islanders

Facing a must-win game, the Mercer Island girls’ basketball team turned to a familiar formula: a little defense and a lot of Beth Richards.

It worked, as Richards continued her scoring spree with 28 points and the Islanders defeated Mount Si 53-38 in a 3A KingCo Conference game to keep their playoff hopes alive.

With the victory, Mercer Island (5-5 conference, 6-10 overall) joined a three-team tie for the final two playoff spots in the Sky Division. Mount Si (5-5, 8-9) and Newport (5-5, 8-9) are also deadlocked. Facing an aggressive Wildcats defense, Richards was knocked down, double-teamed and spent most of the game saddled with three fouls.

The Wildcats got as close as 38-30 after Whitney Beyerlin hit a baseline jumper late in the third quarter. But the Islanders quickly answered back.

Kristen Travis led Mount Si with 11 points and Nicci Landdeck had 10, but the Wildcats struggled to stay in the game, falling behind 14-3 in the first quarter.

Others scoring for the ‘Cats were Angela Jones with one, Lizzie Finnegan with four, Kristen Berndt with two, Whitney Beyerlin with two and Rachel Travis with eight.
