The Wildcats girls dominated competition on the way to the conference title, while the boys narrowly missed a title sweep, during Kingco track and field competition Wednesday and Friday, May 13 and 15, at Eastlake High School in Sammamish.
On Wednesday, Diana Keller won the girls’ long jump event at 17 feet, two and a half inches, while Helen Hasbun finished third. Kelly Besmer led a solid Mount Si showing in the girls’ javelin, with three out of the top four finishers hailing from Mount Si.
Kyle Stevens took the boys’ javelin with a 182-foot throw, and Zach Storm finished third. Ryan Ransavage won the boys’ shot put competition with a 49-foot, five-and three-quarter-inch throw.
Mount Si continued to dominate on Friday, as Keller won the girls 100-meter hurdles, while Hannah Hasbun finished third. Hannah Hasbun and Keller finished first and second in the 300-meter hurdles. The Hasbuns, Keller and Nikki Stanton teamed up to help win the girls 4×100 relay, running a time of 50.36 seconds. Mount Si’s girls’ 4×200 team narrowly missed winning that relay, falling short of beating Liberty.
Corina Linder and Tori Howell went first and second in the discus. Linder threw 105 feet, three inches for the win.
Stephanie Burk tied for the title in the high jump, with Wendy Hecker finishing fourth. Molly Meyers finished third in the shot put to lead the Wildcats in that event. Helen Hasbun also took two second place finishes, in the 100-meter and 200-meter races, while Lindsay Kirby added one in the 400-meter race.
On the boys’ side, Mount Si was led by Brandon Roddewig. The senior took two event crowns — the pole vault, leaping 14 feet, six inches for that title, and the high jump, where he jumped six feet, two inches for the crown there. Roddewig also took a third place in the 110-meter hurdles, while Chad Makela took third in the 300-meter hurdles event.
Zach Brevick took a title in discus, where he threw 141 feet, nine inches to grab top spot. Brevick’s performance led Kyle Stevens and Dylan Woll in taking three of the top four spots.
Mount Si finished with 251.5 points to take the girls’ top spot ,while Bellevue won the boys title with 160.5 points, beating the Wildcats by just 12.5 points. The Wolverines had to rally from behind to take the crown, as Mount Si had held the lead after last Wednesday’s events. The key to their comeback was on the track, where no Wildcat finishers took top spots in the 100-, 200- or 400-meter races
Many of the Wildcats athletes now move on to the SeaKing District meet, which is Wednesday and Friday, May 20 and 22, at the Southwest Athletic Complex in West Seattle. Events Wednesday begin at 3 p.m. both days for 3A competition.
The event will also feature top 4A and 2B teams competing in their respective classifications, so there will be plenty going on for Mount Si track fans to watch while there.
