Tracksters earn ticket to Tacoma

The Wildcat girls track team dominated the SeaKing District meet in Seattle last week, and the Mount Si boys also had a high finish.

Top five team and individual finishers in boys and girls’ events took slots to state from districts, held Wednesday, May 20, and Friday, May 22, at the Southwest Athletic Complex in Seattle. Mount Si’s athletes will compete Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, May 28 to 30, at the state meet in Tacoma.

Many Valley athletes had top-five finishes in their events. In discus, Corinna Linder, with second place, and Tori Howell, with fourth place, grabbed state berths, while Stephanie Burk, at fourth, and Wendy Hecker, at fifth place, got berths in the high jump. Helen Hasbun, at second, and Diana Keller, at fifth place, took spots to Tacoma in the long jump. Hasbun also made state in the 200 meter race. Keller won the 100 meter hurdles, while Helen’s sister Hannah punched a ticket to Tacoma in the 300 meter with a third-place finish.

Mount Si’s girls 4×100 relay team made it in with a third place finish, while the 4×200 relay team finished second. Georgia Reynolds won the pole vault while Kelly Besmer made it to state with a fifth-place showing.

Molly Meyers finished third in the shot put to go to Tacoma. Besmer won the javelin event, Meyers finished third and Emily Ferree took fourth. All three throwers will go to state.

A number of Wildcat boys appear to have made state.

Brandon Roddewig won the boys’ pole vault event with a 14-foot throw. He also qualified for state in the high jump with second place.

Kyle Stevens took second place and Zach Storm took fourth to earn berths in the state boys’ javelin event. Stevens also landed an entry in the discus with a fifth-place showing. Ryan Ransavage took second to take his ticket to Tacoma in the shot put, while Chad Makela picked up third in the 300 meter hurdles for his berth. Mount Si’s boys 4×100 relay team earned a fifth-place slot.
