A Fall City golfer had a nice showing at the recent Washington Junior Golf Association state golf tournament in Spokane.

Mike Rutledge, who will be a senior this fall at Mount Si High School, had solid rounds of 77, 73 and 73 over three days, July 30 through Aug. 1, to finish with an overall score of 223. That earned him a tie for eighth in the boys 16-to-17 age division. His 77 came on the Manito course, and Rutledge thought club selection was key in that offing.

“Manito seems like a course where you would not hit a lot of drivers,” he said.

Two other local golfers also competed east of the mountains. North Bend’s Jack Kelly fired rounds of 76, 74 and 82 for an overall 232, which landed him in a tie for 11th in the boys 14-15 age group. Kelly expects to be back.

“I plan on being there two more years,” he said.

Bradley Harrelson of Snoqualmie had a tougher time, though, shooting 77 and 81 in two rounds and missing the third round cut. He finished with an overall score of 158.

Kelly and Harrelson also will play for the Wildcats this fall. Rutledge hopes golf fans are excited about the season ahead.

“We’re going to be a pretty strong team [this] year,” he said. All three golfers made this event by qualifying at their WJGA district tournament, held July 21 and 22 in Seattle.

The three boys compete this week at the Pacific Northwest Golf Association’s Boys Junior Amateur championship in Mill Creek. The local players are facing off with the best of the Northwest in this event.

Kelly knows what could be at stake: possible college exposure.

“If we do well in this, then our name will get out,” he said.
