Three members of the Mount Si High School volleyball program, players and coaches alike, participated in tournaments over the Fourth of July week.

Wildcat varsity assistant coach Dave Bachman’s KJ Baden 17 team recorded a strong fifth-place finish at the Junior Olympic Volleyball Nationals in Dallas. KJ went 4-4 in play at the event, with their signature win coming in a close, five game battle over the Vision Gold squad out of the San Jose, Calif., area. KJ also beat teams from Oklahoma City, Anaheim, and Kansas City.

Bachman is an assistant coach with the KJ team in addition to his duties during the high school season as Wildcat head coach Bonnie Foote’s lead assistant.

Scarlet and gray was not only on display in the Lone Star State, it was seen in Reno, Nev., as well, as two Mount Si varsity players competed with their Issaquah-based Sudden Impact club teams at the Volleyball Festival tournament.

Shelagh Macaulay, who will be a junior this fall, helped her SIVC Thunder finish 23rd in the 16s division. The Thunder went 8-4, with their big win being a hard-fought, two-game sweep of a team from the Los Angeles area, with the winning score in the second game being 31-29.

Meanwhile, in the 17s, senior-to-be Mackenzie Peerboom helped lead her SIVC Storm squad to a 40th place finish in that age division. The Storm played a number of close matches in the tournament, going 8-5 overall. Among those were two hard-fought three game victories over clubs from northern and southern California.

These three members of the program are now back in the Valley, and all are likely to participate in some fashion in the Mount Si entry in the Kentwood summer volleyball league, which began play last week and continues throughout the month of July, with all games at Kentwood High School in Covington.
