Wildcats grab a victory after tough loss to open week on links
The Mount Si High School girls’ golf team struggled in the elements Monday, April 14 against Mercer Island.
The Wildcats fell 209-266 to the Islanders at Jefferson Park Golf Course in Seattle. MI’s Tracey Tomlinson took medalist honors, firing a round of 38, beating Mount Si’s Katie Somers, who shot a 39, by one stroke. Kirby Thornton paced the Islanders with a round of 42, while Jen Sanford paced the Wildcats with a 44.
The conditions, according to coach Mike Johnston, were “terrible,” and adding to the problems was the fact that the greens on all nine holes at the course were temporary in nature.
The Wildcats traveled to Bellevue Municipal Golf Course Thursday, April 17, and finally grabbed a win, this one over Sammamish. Somers shot a medalist round of 36 on the course, as the Wildcats won 255-292 over the Totems. Sanford shot a round of 47 to pace the Wildcats. Both Mount Si rounds were better than Sammamish’s best score, a 50 from Alayna Herring.
The Wildcats close out their home and regular season schedule Thursday, April 24, with a match at Mount Si Golf Course against Newport. It will be the final home match for the seniors, including Somers and Sanford. Tee time is 3:30 p.m.
