Boys compete in Snohomish

The Mount Si boys track team competed in the prestigious Eason Invitational at Snohomish High School recently. They placed 15th out of 37 teams from all over the state as well as Canada.

Michael Posey was the first Wildcat in four years to compete in a hammer throw competition and he did well, finishing 10th with a personal best of 117 feet. Erik Tierney represented Mount Si in the discus and the shot, finishing ninth in the discus on a personal best toss of 135 feet, four inches and a shot of 40 feet, six inches.

Also competing in the throwing events were Stefan Marth and Alex Grazda in a strong javelin field. Grazda finished sixth with an effort of 172 feet, while Marth threw 144 feet.

Adam Rothgeb anchored the 4×100 team with Brady Barry, Frank McLaughlin and Sean Bothell to post a solid time of 45.01 seconds, good for ninth overall. Barry also qualified for the finals of both the 100 and 200 meter, finishing third in the 100 and sixth in the 200 against strong competition. Rothgeb continued his excellent hurdling efforts, finishing second in the 110 high hurdles.

‘Cats fall to Bellevue

Despite two record-setting performances, the Mount Si girls track team lost a close meet to Bellevue last week, 77 to 71. Tove Garhart broke the old school record in the pole vault with a height of nine feet, six inches. She surpassed the old record by a foot.

The 4×100 relay team of Nicole Remish, Jessie Oliver, Kali Roestel and Symone Shaw broke the record by running a time of 50.8 seconds. The same four girls also ran a season’s-best time of 1:49.8 to win the 4×200 relay. Ellie Allen won the 1,600 and 3,200-meter races and Ariann Barr ran a personal best of 2:40.5 in the 800 meter. Nicole Remish won the 200 and ran a great time of 60.2 seconds to win the 400 meter.

Shannon Posey won the discus with a toss of 106 feet, five inches and had a personal best in the shot with a distance of 32 feet, three inches.

Kalie Roestel won the triple jump with a leap of 30 feet, six inches. The Wildcats had 10 first-place finishes but lacked the depth to make up the difference in the meet score.

Boys team thumps Bellevue

The Mount Si boys track team thumped the dreaded Bellevue Wolverines last week 94-50 in dual meet action.

The relay teams were on fire. The 4×100 team of Brady Barry, Sean Bothell, Frank McLaughlin and Adam Rothgeb won in a season-best and near school-record time of 43.75 seconds, making them a clear threat to qualify for the state meet. The 4×400 team of Max Nelson, Dan Floyd, Thomas Goble and Joe Taklo lead a sea of Mount Si red to sweep the first three places in the event.

The distance crew had an awesome day. Goble ran his best race of the year to win the 800 in a personal-best time of 2:05 with Taklo taking scond. Brad Allen cruised to victory in the 3,200 meter with a 10-second best of his own record at 10 minutes, 39 seconds. He was followed by freshman Owen Strom who took third.

The sprinters performed impressively as well. Barry nosed out a quick Bellevue sprinter to win the 100 and took a second in the 200 while McLaughlin took third. McLaughlin also won the long jump. Floyd battled to a third-place finish in the 400 while Rothgeb again swept the 110 and 300-meter hurdles. He ran the 300 in a season-best time of 41.03. Floyd also triumphed in the triple jump.

The throwers were dominant once again. Tierney, Kyle Meyers and Nick Johnston swept the shot. Graca continued his superb season by winning the javlein and the discus with Tierney taking second in the discus and third in the javelin. Graca also won the high jump, clearing six feet, two inches.

‘Cats have outstanding match

Winning their doubles matches were Katie Woolsey/Mariah Stevens, Tana Thompson/Vivian Yang and Kendra Kinghorn/Britni Schwab.

Wildcats fall to Saints

On April 1 the Wildcats were defeated by the Interlake Saints, 7 matches to 2. The two matches won by Mount Si were in singles as Erika Strine took care of Interlake’s Anfisa Rovinsky in two sets, 6-3 and 6-2, while Janelle Campbell had to rally to win her match against the Saints’ Bora Chang in three sets, 3-6, 7-6, 6-1.

Mount Si falls to Bellevue

Last Tuesday, it was a tale of two different matches as Bellevue doubled up the Wildcats, 6-3. Mount Si lost all singles matches but doubles was a different story as the Wildcats swept all three of those contests. Strine teamed with Alina Plavsky to take care of Taylor Medeiros and Miyuki Sugiyama, 6-3 and 6-4. Britta Safstrom partnered with Nicole Vanourek and the two of them trounced Taylor Mills and Ashley Koch of Bellevue, 6-0, 7-5. The pair of Nena Gonzalez and Kathryn McFarland defeated Jamie Treadway and Haden Mills of the Wolverines, 7-6, 6-4.

Mercer Island too much for Mount Si

On Thursday the Mercer Island Islanders came to Mount Si and also doubled up the Wildcats, 6-3. Strine was the lone singles winner, thumping MI’s Amelia Carpenter, 6-2 and 7-5. Strine and Plavsky won their doubles contest over Cammie Rudolph and Andree Burns in three sets, 3-6, 6-3 and 6-2. Gonzalez and McFarland won their doubles match as well, defeating Kirsten Gradel and Tammy Gu, 3-6, 6-1 and 6-3.

Despite the defeat, Gallacher was pleased with her team’s effort.

“This is a great result for us against Mercer Island this season,” said Gallacher by e-mail.

‘Cats squeak by Bellevue

On April 8, the Wildcats baseball “C” team regrouped after their loss to Issaquah with a gut check 1-0 win over Bellevue.

In the first inning, Ian Brown, leading the team in walks, led off for the ‘Cats with another free pass. After an Evan Aaltonen single and an infield out, Brown scored what turned out to be the game’s only run from second on a Jake Handy single.

From there the pitching was indeed the difference. Handy threw a tidy, complete game, two-hit performance at the Wolverines – seven innings, 81 pitches, 11 strikeouts, zero walks and one hit batter. In the fourth inning the ‘Cat defense backed him up when Bellevue put together a scoring opportunity. With a Bellevue runner on third with one out and the infield drawn in, Trevor Gardunia fielded a hot shot to second and made a strong throw home. Blake Hepner made the bang-bang tag at the plate to turn back the threat. From there Handy reassumed command, facing only 11 batters over the last three and one-third innings.

‘Cats caged by Issaquah

Issaquah roared into Snoqualmie on April 6 to face a relaxed and confident Wildcat “C” baseball team. The Eagles were back on their bus and headed home five innings later with a 14-0 win.
