The Mount Si boys and girls track and field teams had a solid showing in a meet against the Interlake Saints last Thursday, April 22, at Mount Si High School.
Mount Si’s girls built off their strong performance at the April 17 Eason Invitational in Snohomish, with a number of event victories, most notably in the relay events, which Mount Si swept. The Wildcat 4×100, 4×200 and 4×400 relay teams each won their respective races. The 4×100 team ran a time of 51.3 seconds, while the 4×200 won with a time of 1:48.9 and the 4×400 took their race in a time of 4:21.4.
Senior and Southern Oregon-committed Alex Rudd won a pair of events herself. Rudd took the 1,600 meter race in a time of 5:35.6, and ran away with the 3,200 meter crown in a time of 12:19.8. Fellow distance runner Christina Volken also did well. The freshman won the 800 meter race with a time of 2:31.4, and finished a strong third in the 1,600 meter event with a personal best time of 5:42.6.
“Mental preparation is the most important thing,” Volken said. “I just have to focus on my first race.”
Throwing events were strongest in the javelin, with a top-four sweep, led by Kelly Besmer’s throw of 125’ feet, six inches. Others who were part of the Wildcat domination in this event included Molly Meyers, Emily Ferree and Leslie Stevens. Meyers for her part won the shot put with a throw of 36 feet, six inches, and took second in the discus. Stevens was part of a top-three sweep as well in the triple jump for Mount Si, with Sally Miller and Shannon Acker.
“We talk about getting better and progressing and the idea is to have our best performances in May,” said a pleased Mount Si coach Dave Clifford. “The performances are right where they should be.”
The Wildcat boys had a good effort as well against the Saints. Mount Si’s strongest event was in the javelin, where the Wildcats recorded a top eight sweep, led by Zach Storm’s winning throw of 164 feet, six inches. Bradly Stevens finished second with a throw of 157 feet, six inches, and that throw by the freshman earned him the school record for freshmen in that competition.
“Feels great,” Stevens said. “I’ve been working for it this whole season and to break it only halfway through the season, I’ve still got more to improve on.”
Others who finished in the top eight included Joe Farmer, Doc Derwin, A.J. Brevick, John Edens, Jordyn Buyers and Elijah Mayfield.
Shelby Williams continued his solid campaign in both the 100 meter and 200 meter races with wins in both events (11.2 seconds in the 100, 22.9 in the 200). Mount Si also got a win from Collin Van Slyke in the 300 meter hurdles event, running a time of 43 seconds. The Wildcat 4×100 relay team of Williams, Kaleb Huerta, Nick Beck and Tyler Button picked up a victory in their event (44.6 seconds) and Dylan Woll led a 1-2 sweep in the discus for Mount Si. His throw of 133 feet, five inches, beat teammate Aladdin Schirmer’s toss of 123 feet, seven inches, which was still good for second. Woll’s efforts throughout the season have pleased Wildcat boys coach Gregg Meyers.
“Dylan’s being a good leader this year. He’s working hard — it’s the hardest I’ve seen him work,” Meyers said.
