Mount Si’s track season opened under rainy skies last Thursday, March 25, at Mount Si High School, and for the Wildcats, it was a split showing against their opponents, the Issaquah Eagles.

Mount Si’s girls dominated in many events on the way to a 97-53 rout of Issaquah. That domination was led by the Hasbun sisters, who combined for wins in seven events, primarily in running and jumping competitions. Helen won the long jump, 100m and 200m, but Hannah won both the 100m and 300m hurdles events, and she hopes this season will be memorable. “Mostly with running, you just remember the feeling of reward when you’re done,“ Hasbun said. The two of them, both seniors, then teamed up to help the Wildcat 4×100 and 4×200 relay teams post wins.

Helen Hasbun’s win in the 200m led a solid finish by Mount Si, who had four out of the top five finishers in that race. Hannah’s win in the 300m hurdles also led a strong event for the Wildcats, with a similar four out of top five result.

There was also success in the throwing events as well. Corinna Linder won the discus with a throw of 102’5”, while Emily Ferree took home the javelin title with a throw of 100’1”. The Wildcats swept the top three places in that competition.

Distance runner Alex Rudd also had a strong showing in her first spring action, with a win in the 3200m (5:32.4) and a second in the 1600m. It was announced last week by Southern Oregon University that the Mount Si senior has signed a letter of intent to run with their women’s cross country team this fall.

Other winners included Claire Larsen in the 400m run, and Lexi Swanson in the high jump.

Mount Si’s boys fell 78-67 to the Eagles. The Wildcats’ strength came in events where they have been very successful in the past: the throwing competitions. Mount Si swept the top five positions in the discus, led by the 136’10” throw of Aaron Moetului which won the competition for the Wildcat senior. Nine out of the top ten finishers in the event were Mount Si athletes. It continued in the javelin competition, where four of the top five placers were Wildcats; that group was led by Zach Storm, who threw his a distance of 149’7” to take the event title. Moetului finished second.

The shot put also was a successful competition for the Wildcats, with a top three sweep. Dylan Woll won the event with a throw of 44’7”. Kolton Auxier was second, and Moetului finished third.

In running competition, Shelby Williams took home two titles – in the 100m and 200m races. In the 100m, he clocked a time of 11.2 seconds to narrowly beat his teammate Kaleb Huerta for that crown, and in he 200m, he ran a time of 23.4 seconds. Evan Ellington finished a second behind tied for third place. All was not lost for Ellington, however, as the senior later took home the long jump title with a jump of 18’11”.

Collin Van Slyke did well in the hurdles events, as he took home top three finishes in both events. The senior finished third in the 110m. “I thought it was pretty good compared to my times last year,” Van Slyke said. He also took second in the 300m competition.

The Wildcats are on the road this week, at Woodinville against the Falcons and Newport Knights.
