Despite all the flooding that affected the Valley over the past several days, Mount Si’s wrestling team made their way up to Everett and competed against top wrestlers in the Everett Classic.

Mount Si as a team finished 15th overall out of 19 teams competing with 64 points. The Wildcats were led by Ryan Makela and Ryan Ransavage.

Makela won the 140-pound weight division. He pinned Bellevue Christian’s Christian Erne, then beat Mount Vernon’s Rafael Avila in a tight 8-6 decision. Makela then pinned Arlington’s Nathan Shortt to make the finals. Once there, the Wildcat junior took care of Oak Harbor’s John Tuttle 5-1 to bring home the crown. The 140 division also had another good showing from a Mount Si wrestler. Dillon Oord rebounded from a first-round pin by Decatur’s Greg Bull, before beating Mariner’s Chance Cook 6-4 in a consolation match. Oord then was pinned again, this time by Mount Rainier’s Dustin Bishop, to end his tournament.

Ransavage finished as a runner-up in the 285 class, as he pinned Westview’s Dan Lusk, Everett Airick Snow and Vashon’s Timmy Jovaonvichelli all in succession to reach the finals, where he was pinned himself by Decatur’s Tevyn Tilliman, who took the crown in this division.

Connor Deutswch (145) won his first-round match, over Emerald Ridge’s Kyler Osborne, then was pinned twice in succession by Everett’s Evan Paeth and Oak Harbor’s Ben Page to end his run. Doc Derwin (189) and Erik Sorvik (215) both had similar results in their tournaments, as they both pinned their first-round opponents before being each pinned twice in a row to knock them out of contention.

Andrew Sypher (119), Aaron Peterson (125), Ben Larson (130), Alec Faccone (135) and Shelby Williams (160) also competed in this event; Sypher, Larson, Williams and Faccone both fell in their first two matches and were quickly sent home, while Peterson, after being pinned by Mount Vernon’s Levi Koetje, won his first consolation match by forfeit before being pinned by Issaquah’s Jordan Turner.

Lake Stevens took the overall title, beating Everett.

Mount Si is scheduled to return to Kingco action this Thursday, Jan. 15, as they travel to Garfield High in Seattle to meet the Bulldogs. Meet time is 6 p.m.
